Scientists are in the process of developing of a new positron emission tomography (PET) scanning device which is capable of increasing by a significant amount the sensitivity of the images scanned. This is a considerable advancement in the technologies for the treatment and diagnosis of diseases like sarcoidosis.
- PET scans possess high sensitivity and are not invasive either: For scanning all kinds of details related to the human body, physicians can use PET scans to assess physiologies as well as metabolisms of patients. Its usefulness is only restricted by the lower signal versus noise ratios which may reduce the quality of the image produced, which may expose patients to larger amounts of radiation.
- Research team at University of California have claims of a newer PET scan machine: According to these researchers, they have a highly sensitive scanner. It is also capable of imaging the entire body of the individual, also increasing the sensitiveness of the image by as high as forty times more. This will also help in reducing the duration taken during scanning the body by at least ten times. The total time for a successful scan could be as low as a minute, if not less.
- University of California, Davis is building prototypes: In collusion with United Imaging Health-care, they are making a total body PET-CT scanner which will improve the diagnosis process of patients, as well the quality of treatment they receive.
With this technology, the price of a complete body PET scan will also eventually reduce as scientists are encouraged to develop better technology to help with total body surveillances. It will also help to boost advancements in nuclear medicine, and ensure that newer biomarkers are developed in these fields.
